BILINGUAL BOOK READING with LUIS AGUILAR-MORENO

LUIS AGUILAR-MORENO read the book “The Many Faces of Max”, by Katherine Del Monte, Illustrated by Susan Arena, in English and Spanish, to an audience of children and adults, some of whom speak only English, only Spanish or speak both.

Last December, STAIRS ACADEMY held a free community event in Sunset Park Brooklyn, which consisted of a Bilingual Book Reading (Spanish/English), a Book Making Workshop and celebration of completion of the STAIRS ACADEMY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM, for several Brooklyn College students completing their internship.

After some food and drink and getting too know each other, opening remarks were made by STAIRS ACADEMY founder Graeme Sibirsky and then elementary school teacher and master storyteller LUIS AGUILAR-MORENO read the book “The Many Faces of Max”, by Katherine Del Monte, Illustrated by Susan Arena, in English and Spanish, to an audience of children and adults, some of whom speak only English, only Spanish or speak both.

This illustrates how using children’s books written in two languages, boosts literacy and love of reading, simultaneously for English Language Learners and native English speakers. Books like these help families and teachers build connections between school and home, enabling families to read together, students of different backgrounds and languages to read together in class and students to maintain their home language and culture, while learning English.

Grace Law, fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, was on hand to give some Chinese vocabulary and interpretations, as the Sunset Park neighborhood has a large Asian population and we were prepared to welcome any Chinese language speakers who may have attended the event.
